Final Year Project
Combining live action and 3D animated elements
A large proportion of my degree consisted of a multimedia project that tested many of the skills I had learnt. By combining the practices of both 3D animation and visual effects a short 30 second piece of film was produced that blends computer graphics with live footage, creating a believable environment into which the viewer can become drawn. To achieve this, a digital character was created and used as the main focus of attention. The following set of images shows how this was achieved.
Stills from the animatic based on the original storyboard.
 Early robot design concepts.
Using a model AT-ST from the Star Wars films to help set up the cameras and lighting.
Final model before smoothing and rigging.
Smoothing, bump maps and texturing.
Fully rigged robot. The green cube represents the dummy controller which allows for the initial setup of the robot in each scene.
Tracking scene markers using PFTrack.
Testing the track by placing objects on a plane.
Example of how a shot is layered. From left to right: Lens blurred foreground image, digitally created replacement mesh for the actor to walk behind, actor with blue screen removed and background image.
Not only did grain have to be digitally created but so did noise, the eye of the robot is distorted to appear more mechanical than organic.
Example of how the robot is composited into the scene.
